Target Audience:

The Foundation of the ASNR Symposium 2017 will focus on Discovery and Didactics featuring “What's New?” for neuroradiologists. It will focus on the role of neuroimaging in defining CNS disease mechanisms and how to best prepare for change, including “What's Next?” in training, teaching and leading the process of lifelong learning. The target audience will include practicing neuroradiologists, other radiologists charged with interpreting urgent CNS and head and neck studies, neuroscientists interested in the latest advances, clinical colleagues ordering CT and MRI in an emergency setting, and trainees. Dedicated topic areas include what's new in Head and Neck Techniques and Pediatric Neuroimaging, Metallic Artifact Reduction MR Sequences (MARS), Imaging Debate session on fMRI: Fact, Fiction and Future, Overnight Coverage Alternatives, Neuroimaging for Functional Neurosurgery, Cerebrovascular Treatment and Training, Wellness and Burnout in Practice and Training, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

About This Module:

This module is composed of three parts:
  • Advanced Functional Anatomy for BOLD Pre-surgical Mapping David Black, MD
  • Identifying Resting State Networks: The Default Mode and Beyond Haris Sair, MD
  • DTI White Matter Anatomy with Clinical Correlates Aaron S. Field, MD, PhD


Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:

Part I: Advanced Functional Anatomy for BOLD Pre-surgical Mapping

  1. Identify the most useful sites of BOLD activation for presurgical assessment of multiple varities of eloquent cortex.
  2. Review both the value of functional data which depicts regions that do not have strict anatomic locations (especially when pathologically distorted) as well as the limitations of BOLD fMRI localization.

Part II: Identifying Resting State Networks: The Default Mode and Beyond

  1. Classify commonly described intrinsic brain networks assessed by resting state functional MRI based on topology of connectivity.
  2. Explain the dynamic nature of functional connectivity and the inter-relationship between major canonical intrinsic brain networks.

Part III: DTI White Matter Anatomy with Clinical Correlates

  1. Review the functional anatomy of major projection, commissural, and association fiber tracts of the human brain as depicted by clinical diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).
  2. Relate commonly observed clinical deficits to pathology (or surgical injury) involving subcortical white matter components of functional neurocognitive networks.

Credit Designation Statement

ASNR designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Method of Physician Participation:

Each physician will listen to each audio self-directed module while following along with the visual slides. Upon completion, each physician will answer evaluation questions and pass a post test with at least a score of 80% to receive their CME certificate.
